Mentor vs.Teacher

children-silhouette-clip-art.gifI just had quiet a productive evening, sewing pajamas for my three boys while listening to a lecture on Homeschool.com about the Thomas Jefferson Education. In general I don't like following anything in life just one particular way, except Islam, for God is whom I live to obey and worship as a muslim, but other than that Im very careful in just trusting what people "think" is the "best way" to do just anything. Listening to this talk though, felt like this is what I've been trying to achieve all along, I just didn't have a name for it.. or didn't quiet know how to get there..

Since we started homeschooling I've been reading about how to become a better teacher and since I heard the word mentor I know that I don't just want to be a teacher I want to be my boys mentor.. I want for them to develop the love for books, the love for reading, learning, being curious, I enjoy preparing interest based lessons, ordering books from the library, I so thrive to see that sparkle in my boys eyes as I surprise them with new exciting study themes etc. etc.

As these ideas and inspirations usually happen way after my bedtime (of course!!) I did some brief research and ordered the book called "how to read a book" who's review sounded like a good place to start. I'm also looking forward to reading some classics and most importantly I want to go back to my believe and read more and learn about the life of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon Him) who is a true role model for humanity because of his excellent character. Fortunately for us this is easy, since His life is documented in to the very detail in every aspect of his life. My goal would be to make the transition from teacher to mentor and implement my technics to best educate my boys in a way that God/ Allah can be pleased with them and me, InshaAllah (God willing)
